Title
[D8503ZAL], Letter from Ezra Torrance Gilliland to Thomas Alva Edison, April 27th, 1885
Editor's Notes
Enclose figures showing the curvature of the earth, it is about .571 feet (7 inches) for one mile. The table enclosed shows what they would have to do for long-distance telegraphing by induction to work. Would need very good wire (probably the best of steel) for it to work. Enclsoures are included, first is a chart and diagram of necessary elevation of each station for certain distances between stations; second gives rule/equation for finding the curvature of the earth.
