Title

[D8640M], Letter from Edison Gower-Bell Telephone Co of Europe, R Rodgers to Thomas Alva Edison, June 3rd, 1886

Editor's Notes

You will remember that when you sold to Edison-Gower your European rights in the agreement of 10 Nov. 1881 that it included benefits arising from the 18 May 1880 agreement between you and Descamps, Bonquie, and Spee of Brussels who were granted all patents for your telephone inventions that have been taken at Brussels in consideration of services they rendered in defense of your patent of 31 Jan. 1878; it was expressly stipulated that they form a company within three months of having the patents in controversy validated; but the Belgian minister never confirmed the validity of the patents and no steps have been made to form a company; Bonquie seems inclined to let the agreement remain "a dead letter," but we desire to use legal means to decide if the Edison patents in Belgium can be made of any value to us; since Bonquie et al have prior rights we cannot sue for infringement unless they join the suit, which they refuse to do; will you inform Bonquie et al of your intention to transfer to us the rights under the 18 May 1800 contract? If we can get the contract with them cancelled, we have no doubt of proving infringement and suing for a royalty for the past and future; your interest in the Company would then be enhanced. [Descamps and Spee are not indexed]
