Title

[D8747AAM], Letter from Witherbees Sherman & Co to Thomas Alva Edison, October 7th, 1887

Editor's Notes

"We have already advised you of the shipment to you of a barrel of our Iron ore as supported by your Mr Tate of 40 Wall St. In further explanation of what we would like you to accomplish for us we would say the ore contains in its natural state about 2.25% of Phosphoric Acid or Apatite which renders its unfit for use in Bessemir iron manufacture and we would like to separate into the little red crystals of Apatite from the ore as they contain all the Phosphorous there is in the ore an are also valuable for fertilizing purposes and if we can bring the Phosphoric Acid in the ore down to about .11 (which would be about .05 Phosphorous) at a cost not to exceed say 75 cents per ton we could probably sell 100.000 tons of the ore annually -- should you like to see us in reference to the matter or have us present at your experiments we could arrange to do so if you would give us a days notice in advance by wire -- To make your experiments complete we think an analysis should be made fo the Apatite to see if it shows a percentage of iron which would be the waste while an analysis of the Iron for Phosphorous would show if the Phosphorous was sufficiently taken out to make the ore within the ab[--] Bessemer limits. ## We understand if your experiments are successful you are to inform us what you can deliver us a plant for to accomplish the result commercially."
