Title

[D8802ABJ], Letter from Bergmann & Co to Edison Electric Light Co of Philadelphia, William Dennis Marks, November 9th, 1888

Editor's Notes

"We have your favor of the 5th inst., requesting estimate on certain parts of Equalizers, as per blue prints. You say in your letter that you are having the frames and resistances of the Equalizers built and put together elsewhere. ### We are, on this occasion, obliged to respectfully decline to give the desired estimates. Our contract with the Edison El. Lt. Co. permits and requires us to manufacture and supply any of the appliances and apparatus used in the Edison system, but this is the first time we have ever been called upon to make certain parts of such apparatus used in the Edison system, but this is the first time we have ever been called upon to make certain parts of such apparatus as this, on which we have spent a great deal of time an dmoney and made valuable improvements, for which we have applied for patents, and our contract does not require us to do so. We would not care so much about this if the goods required were regular standard apparatus which we know would work when they left here, but, as appears from the blue prints sent us, the parts which you desire are not similar to anything that has been made before, and therefore, there is a possibility that defects may crop up in the apparatus; not only this, but if part be made one place and the balance in another, this possibility becomes a probability. We do not care to have any question arise about our work after it leaves here. If we make the whole apparatus, we will know that it is all right before it leaves our establishment or it will not be sent out, but we shall have no means of knowing this unless we make it all. We must therefore stand on our rights, given us by the Edison Electric Light Co. in our contract with them, above mentioned, and respectfully decline to estimate on the parts of aparatus for which you have sent us blue prints." Very Respectfully Yours, (Signed) Bergmann & Co.
