Title

[D8831AAY], Letter from William Dennis Marks to Thomas Alva Edison, May 10th, 1888

Editor's Notes

"I note what you say in memo re my letter of March 24th and have frequently short circuited external circuit of small dynamos before starting up to illustrate to my classes the [unclear] of the field of a short machine - but I have seen overloaded armatures go-as for instance in Frank Inst test your 420 amp machine & I have never returned to try the effect of a slowly diminishing external circuit resistance on any machine [unclear] a safe unclear] or to suddenly short cirsuit one while in action with full load. I am glad to learn what you have told me as it produces a comfortable feeling regarding the very alrge dynamos now under consideration for this satation. It would seem to me that if we can get greater economy of steam, greater concentration of power and double the capacity at less cost per amp that it would be wise to make the change to 1000 amp dynamos. Sims has sent me a staisfactory design for engine to carry 150 lbs. You will greatly assist me by your approval if you can give it." TAE marginalia: "I believe in Babcock bodies & 160 lbs pressure, High speed Engine, good engineers with good pay - 1000 ampere machines, with a margin is them for 3 hours of 1204 amperes and extra 30 volts ie 140 volts to take care of future Improvements in high resistance lamp-- Yours Edison"
