Editor's Notes

"The following is a record of the work done in one complete day by the engines and boilers at the Laboratory commencing at 6:30 on the 24th inst. ### Conditions: ### Two boilers fed during the day. Every barrow of coal was weighed and made up to 260 lbs. The ashes were also weighed. Every lb. of water that entered the feed was recorded. ### No steam was allowed to leave the boilers for any other purpose than to supply the engines. ### Indicator diagrams were taken of both Arm. & Sims engines and the Brown engine from time to time. ### The results are seen in the following table:-- ### [Table of times engines were started and stopped] Boildrs left in same condition at close as at commencement. ### 26 barrows of coal burnt each weighing 260 lbs or 6760 lbs say 6800 ### Total ashes reduced 792 lbs say 800 ### 6000 lbs ### Total amount of water evaporated 5700 lbs ### Total H.P. hours 11446 coal per H.P. 5.24 lbs. ### Water evaporated per lb. of coal--9.5 lbs ### Water evaporated per H.P. per hr. 4.8 lbs. ### Weight of ashes 13% of total weight of coal used. ### [Table with measurements per engine, per hour] The H.P. hours accounted for are 66 + 3419/6.6=584. ### Added to this the 225 H.P. of the Brown = 809 ### Or, out of 919 H.P. 584 are accounted for."
