[LB027915], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to U.S. Post Office Dept. Foreign Mails, Nicholas Montgomery Bell, January 23rd, 1889

Editor's Notes

"Replying to yours No. 84396 Ger., under date 16th instant, asking for full information respecting my Phonoplex system of Telegraphy, for transmission to the authorities of the Postal Administration of Germany, I take pleasure in enclosing herewith a pamphlet setting forth the various uses of the system, together with copies of letters from certain of my licenses, giving expressions of opinion as to the practical merits of the same. ### The following is a list showing the parts which are necessary for the complete equipment of one office:- [contains list of equipment]. ### I understand from your letter that this equipment is required for use only in the German Imperial Postal Museum, for exhibition purposes, and I will be indebted if you will convey my compliments to the German Postal authorities, and say that, if after examining the reports enclosed herewith, they consider it desirable to include this system of telegraphy among their other exhibits, it will give me pleasure to present them with the complete equipment for two phonoplex terminal stations, which will enable them to separate the system as in practice. ### In the issue of the SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN for March 24th, 1888, which the German Postal authorities refer to in their letter to yourself, is given a diagram and explanation of phonoplex connections. Should further information of this nature be required, I will be very happy to supply it." Yours very truly, [signed] TAE
