Title
[LB029448], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Michigan Phonograph Co, John L Butterfield, May 17th, 1889
Editor's Notes
"I have received your letter of 13th inst., in regard to a communication which you have received from the North Am. Phonograph Co., in which you state that they claim that the battery is not a part of a complete motor phonograph. This is a question upon which I can express no opinion, for the reason that I have nothing whatever to do with the business methods of the North Am. Phonograph Co., I may say for your information that I have given a great deal of attention to this battery question, and am getting out a cell which will last for a month or so, and which will be perfectly satisfactory in every respect. In this vicinity there are a number of private telegraph concerns which make a business of applying battery power and keeping it in order. If any of the Phonograph Companies should find it desirable to adopt this policy, they will be able to put it into effect very readily, and could charge so much per 100 phonograph hours, the battery being its own meter. I never intended that the first battery furnished with the phonograph machines should be adopted permanently, as it is simply a Granet [?] cell, and has all the defects of ordinary batteries." Yours very truly, [signed] TAE
