Edison, N.J. March 21, 1900
Mr. W.S. Mallory, Vice President
Orange, N.J.
Dear Sir:--
Confirming your instructions I beg herewith to submit result of tests of temperature of air in Mill #1 under system of steam heating now in operation.
The test was made under favorable conditions than we can expect to have when in operation. Care was taken to have all openings closed as near as possible for a period of 18 hours; neither was there any wind at time of test.
The temperature of the air, the hour when taken and point where taken are shown in the following table. The accompanying map contains the same information, more in detail.
At beginning of test, press in boilers was 83 pounds; at same time gauge in mill showed 12 pounds. At end of test press in boiler was 76 pounds in mill 17 pounds. The temperature at two points "A" & "G" has taken twice; win., at beginning of test and end of test, showing as follows:
A 5:35 A.M. Temp. 37 deg. F
" 8:36 " " 45 "
G 9:08 " " 28 "
" 9:10 " " 37 "
Showing an increase of 8 or 9 degrees.
Temperature outside of mill between the hours of 5:15 A.M. and 9:30 A.M had increased 10 deg. It is quite probable that had the outside temperature remained constant (2 deg below zero) that the average temperature of the mill would be several degrees less than shown by tests. I especially call your attention to the variations in the automatic press valve, which certainly is not satisfactory.
I was accompanied during the tests by Mr. W. Burns and Mr. J. Noon, Mr. Ward's assistants, both of whom I have requested to submit a brief report on the matter.
Yours truly,
(Signed) H.S. Gay,
Supt. Edison, N.J. March 22, 1900
