Title
[NB002010], Technical Note, Arthur Coyle Payne, June 10th, 1887
Editor's Notes
"Payne #6 IN crucible put in reg. forms, 32 reg 16 C.P. bamboo filaments fastened down to prevent them from floating. Poured in enough mercury to cover forms then put in enough tin to cover forms if mercury were not there. Put in furnace chambre & in 3 hrs. raised temp. from 75 [degrees] to 600 [degrees] Fahr.-- then put in forge & brought up to vivid white heat. Allowed to cool down, but before tin reached solidifying point it was poured off & forms immediately covered with powdered plumbago to keep off air as much as possible. Carbons appeared rather dull black. Not first rate. Found 13 broken-- sent 19 to Hanson to be run through as Ord. P.--#7."
