Title
[X154A8AH], Letter from Munsell (Eugene) & Co to Edison Machine Works, January 19th, 1889
Editor's Notes
We notice in reading the proceedings of Congress that the Senate tariff bill contemplates placing a duty of 355 upon Mica. Knowing that you are large consumers of this article, and also knowing that the placing of such a large duty upon this article will enable the mineers in this country to force the price of mica as high as they see fit we would respectfully ask you in self defence to sent a telegram to your Senators protesting against the impostion of such an excessive duty. Six years aga when, mica wa only used by Stove Manufacturers, there was such a scracity that they found it impossible to get mica at any price. Now that is is used largely by the Electrical trade, we think that the imposition of such a duty will place it in the power of the miners to get any price they please. Will you not kindly upon receipt of this send a telegram at once to the two Senators from your State, asking them to go before the Senate Finance Committee and protest against this duty. A vote is expected on Tuesday, so that there is not itme for delay.
