My Dear Col:-- I return herewith Johnson's letter of the 7th.##He is in error when he says the matter was not left to him at the outset, as I have never expressed any opinion on it by his request, consequently it is not embarrassed with any previousl judgment of mine.##I am just in receipt of a very savage letter from Bergman, which will probably break off relations between us, as what I wrote to you and Johnson could only have been furnished to him by a gross broach of confidence or a stupidity equally as bas, and I would rather have paid a sum of money myself than to have had this thing occur.##I telegraphed you yesterday to please return my letter, but you have not seen fit to do so.
