This notebook covers the period March 1879-July 1880. Most of the entries are by C. B. Mumsell and John W. Lawson. There are also entries by Edison, Charles Batchelor, and Francis Upton. The material by Mumsell consists of notes on lampblack and sulphide experiments. The notes by Lawson relate to experiments on woods for lamp filaments, chalk experiments conducted with Batchelor, and miscellaneous chemical experiments. The material by Edison includes notes on carbon filaments, calculations about electric power distribution, and lists of metal alloys. There are also miscellaneous calculations by Upton and others. The label on the front cover is marked \"Woods ect.\"" There are 282 pages numbered back to front, and the book has been used in both directions.
