Title
[CG001AAI1], Letter from Sherburne Blake Eaton to Edison Ore Milling Co Ltd, October 30th, 1881
Editor's Notes
Eaton's report. Visited Quoque, LI on 30 May and made favorable report. Subsequently board decided to send out prospectors to look for other iron-rich sands: Wm Carman to Ontario, Sterne? to Martha's Vineyard, Cheeseman to RI. Summarizes findings; only RI satisfactory (25% magnetic iron). Summarizes setting up operations. Processing 7-8 tons per day. Major drawback is lack of shipping facilities; schooners won't anchor except with NW wind. Most mfgers think this "fuse ore" can't be work but some realize it can; have finally found reliable customer (Poughkeepsie Iron & Steel); promptly ordered 75 tons. Small vessel now carrying 56 tons of that order. Cheeseman wants larger engine. Dryer also needs repair (& larger plates). This operation is valuable experience to Co. Poughkeepsie representatives says he knows party who will buy our tailings. During summer Meadowcroft invesetigated large tract at Moisic in Gulf of St. Lawrence; good ore but asking price too high. Have been getting numerous inquiries about sale terms of separators, especially for Calif. Figures of investment and expenses follow.
