New York, Feb. 11th 1901
Thomas A. Edison, Esq.,
Orange, N.J.
My dear Mr. Edison:-
Permit me to extend my hearty congratulations and best wishes on this your birthday. When I saw you recently, I mentioned that the American Institute of Electrical Engineers would hold a "Conversazionne" about the middle of March, and I was led to hope from your endorsement of this idea, and from other remarks, that you would perhaps be able to contribute something to this first "Conversazionne" of the Institute. I now write to state that in order to give additional time, and secure the full success of the "Conversazionne",the Committee has decided to make the date April 18th, and it will probably be held at Columbia University, and where continuous and alternating currents, and other facilities will be accorded us. You know how eminently successful these entertainments have been abroad, and our Committee is exceedingly anxious to make this one, given by the American Institute is very successful, and a credit to the Institute, and all concerned. Initiations will be extended to people of prominence, connected with the State and Municipal Government, and others, and the Committee are encouraged to believe that some of our most prominent members will contribute features of great interest and novelty. As the date has been changed, the Committee also hope that Mrs. Edison and yourself will be able to attend the "Conversazione."
Trusting that your trip to Florida may prove of very great benefit to you, I remain
Yours sincerely,
W. J. Hammer
