Letterhead of the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison Orange, N. J. 9/30/02/WSM/L Mr. W. E. Gilmore, Orange, N. J. My dear Sir:- I think there must be some mistake on the attached bill from the City of Orange, for water furnished my Laboratory from December 1st, 1901 to June 1st, 1902, for 8,085,000 gallons of water at 10 cents per 1,000 gallons-- $808.50. Our records from the meter show from May 1st, 1902, as follows: May 91,000 cubic feet June 59,000. " " July 53,000. " " August 52,000 " " September 50,000 " " About June 1st, we discovered a leak in the feed water heater which accounts for the reduction in cubic feet-from that time; the leak would be at its worst at the end of the period, so six months at 91,000 cubic feet - 546,000 cubic feet, leaving 532,000 cubic feet not accounted for. For the eighteen months previous to December 1st, 1901, the City billed for 1,689,000 cubic feet or an average of 93,833 cubic feet per month. <File> <illegible marginalia> Letterhead of the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison. Orange, N. J. Mr. W. E. G. #2. The conditions at the Laboratory have been the same during the period covered by the bill from December 1st, 1901 to June 1st, 1902, as heretofore, and no more water has been used in my work. I wish you would take the matter up and arrange for a rebate of, say, 50% on the bill for $808.50, as rendered. Thos A Edison Orange, N. J., June, 1902.
