- Proposes independent teleph agreement with Panama RR; they have duplex telegraph but it rusts. Telephones for tropics should be nickel-plated brass or other resistant metal, and wood well-seasoned. During delay at Aspinwall, looked for monkeys but could find none; "will have to send up some from the south....if I can pick up a [thorough]bred, he goes."
