- Statistics and construction info for installation of u/g cables at Menlo. First illumination was on ckt running past Edison's barn; Nov. 1, 1880. 2nd illumination on turnpike along RR, 3600 ft, Nov. 2; TAE house lighted, Nov. 8. "First general illumination of whole system, about 500 lamps" Jan. 19, 1881. 600 lamps on Jan. 26. 650 lamps on Feb. 24. System in operation till mid-March at least; total length 6 miles. Distance fr station to end of longest ckt was 3600 ft. Largest cable was 25 strands #10 wire. Insulation was 2 layers cloth dipped in a compound. Insulation worked great and line worked in all kinds of weather. "About 400 of the lights were on the street circuits and the remainder were distributed in the laboratory, machine shop, office, and ten hosues and stores." poss select; good view of Menlo Park installation. dh 11oct02
