Title

[D8239ZEF], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Edison Electric Light Co Ltd, Arnold Henry White, September 12th, 1882

Editor's Notes

[6 page typed copy] Irate reply to White's complaints, to him and EHJ, about excessive costs and low-balled estimates. Works through some figures, says his estimates were carefully made to "compare like with like" and reflect accurately the costs of equipment delivered to London. Argues that in NY experience shows that the same "severe" competition can be met and defeated, while still making money. Re: yours to Upton 18 August, the lamps sent were hand-made samples and necessarily very expensive; we only charged you 1/2. If you prefer, will not send you any new varieties until "long after" when they are cheaply machine made. Also don't agree with you contention in letter to Upton about contractual limits on lamp prices, which applied only to 16 and 8cp. Also working on high resis lamp expensive to mfg but economical to use. Disappointed that the Co there doesn't seem to encourage my efforts in this direction. About the armatures, you accepted the dynamos and so thought you'd want spare armatures, since they don't last forever. In case of disputed amount, American practice is to pay it and seek reimbursement rather than leave it unpaid. Does Co reserve right not to pay future bills? If so will insist on cash payment in NY. "From your letters mainly to Mr. Johnson I gain the impression that you imagine that it is my desire to force on you the product of our factories here. I wish to disabuse your mind of any such idea and would add that I shall be equally as pleased as yourself when you compnay can get theirlighting apparatus manufactured in England equally as good and cheaper than we can ship it from here."
