Title
[D8253S], Telegram from Chicago Telephone Co, Charles Norman Fay to Thomas Alva Edison, April 23rd, 1882
Editor's Notes
"Before consolidation Edison exchange here had 1440 subscribers, battery system Bell exchange 1579, magneto system total less 300 duplicate where subscribers had both telephones 2717. In 18 central offices average daily number of telephone connections made 14,000" etc. Now have 2650 subscribers, mostly magneto, 2 central offices average daily connections 21,000. Consolidation not yet complete, has interfered with good service and increasing rental receipts. "Believe in but one exchange and that two cannot permanently exist."
