Title

[D8435ZAW], Letter from Willis N Stewart to Thomas Alva Edison, August 8th, 1884

Editor's Notes

Santiago. reply to June 18 from TAE re: Vina del Mar plant. This company is formed with a capital of 25,000 (Chilean currency) of which 22,000 is subscribed. Papers are drawn, Directory elected, ground for central station given, and poles bought. Signing of papers by stockholders must be completed next week before a certain notary takes office. I then get 50% of the contract price in cash, when I will make the formal order. In the meantime, I learned in New York that the Babcock & Wilcox boilers are made by the Glasgow house at prices 12% under those charged in the States. As Vina del Mar is my firs plant the contract price is low, & you probably understand that this work in any country is somewhat risky." Asks to have the boiler shipped directly from Glasgo to Valpariso via Liverpool#The man you propose sending me for Central Station work should be ready to sail 20 days after receipt of this letter. Send someone with working knowledge of Babcock & Wilcox boilers "I cannot afford to pay #350 steamship fares each way for an expert. Very clear plans & working directions will probably enable us to erect these boiler without trouble." If an expert is absolutely necessary, send man from Glasgow; will pay 3L for week, transport, living, 2 year contract. # Satisfied with TAE statement re division of profits on Vina del Mar, but thinks he should name a lower price on fixtures to secure larger sales. "It also confuses work to have different prices for Santiago, isolated and village work." The lower you can bill these goods, the more business I can do, as even the cheapest cost a great deal after the exchange, duties & multiple exactions of the Customs House.
