Abstract

On Jan. 5 we rcvd letter from president of Shamokin company stating that 2nd engine malfing. They hired local blacksmith to fix and he installed parts backwards then hammered them when wouldn't fit. Also engineer would nap and drink on job. Similar news from other stations. "After we leave a station it is left to the mercy of people who are totally unable to tell whether the Engineer performs his duties or not. Were we in a position to do so it would be an easy matter to rectify all this as you know, but as that position is one we do not occupy we can only sit still and wait until the 'disease' proves 'fatal' and then be the first to receive an invitation to attend the 'wake' and shoulder the spleen of the mourners." xxx use annotation for local problems dh 23oct06 xxx
