[Letterhead of Headquarters Army of the United States.] Have known Colonel G.E. Gouraud for over 20 years; he served with distinction during the War of the Rebellion and was mentioned several times in General Orders for gallantry. He served as Adie-de-Amp, Inspector General and in command of troops. "I take pleasure in commending him to officers and comrades{?} he may meet in his long journey in Europe."
