Title
[D8523G], Letter from Edison Electric Illuminating Co (Circleville), Harry Ward Leonard to Thomas Alva Edison, January 23rd, 1885
Editor's Notes
[Letterhead of The Circleville Edison Electric Illuminating Co.] Since writing to you a few weeks ago, I have made a contract with the Co. to take entire charge of their plant and business until May 1, 1885. Plant was in very bad shape, engine dynamos and lines needed prompt and careful attention, and the plant had not added any lamps for months. I have made contracts for 150 lamps in the past week. The gas interests here are owned by one man and he "makes a desperate fight." He reduced the price of gas yesterday "(and splendid coal gas it is)" to $1.00 per thousand feet and we will have to follow him. I am trying to get the Co. to enlarge ASAP, as the uncertainty caused by having a single boiler and engine makes people hesitate to take the light. Our maximum load each evening is 750 lamps. Dynamos run beautifully without{?} spark. Receipts are about $550; running expenses about $350. "As you see this is only a temporary position for me and I sincerely hope that should an opportunity occur, you will recommend me for a good position. I feel competent to undertake any of the work connected with the business and think my work at Middletown ought to stand here in good stead." TAE Marg: "[--]th Jan. 85 ##Wrote him would look out for position and that Co. made mistake in reducing [-----]."
