Title

[D8535G], Letter from Emil Rathenau, Deutsche Edison Gesellschaft to Thomas Alva Edison, February 14th, 1885

Editor's Notes

[Original letter typewritten in German; handwritten translation follows.] In ours of the 6th, we asked you to send us Model Drawings and Explanations for the 2 and 3 conductor systems and received your cable: "Each system costs $2500 and see Tube Company's letter. Do you order both?" ##We received the Tube Co's letter at the same time. ##We must confess, we did not think we would have to acquire this for our business with the sacrifice such a large sum of money, but applied to you with our request with regard to the contract with the Company Continentale Edison to which you joined also, because that contract binds the contracting gentlemen to furnish us without extra charge or cost all your inventions, experiences, and improvements, etc., patented or unpatented. We also have the conviction that you consider us your interests (as we do) and that you will impart to us as readily as heretofore the furtherances we need. ##"We have, although we cannot acknowledge any obligation to do so, decided to to appropriate a sum for obtaining the desired material" to compensate you and the Tube Co for expenses and cabled you yesterday: "We accept information, samples, etc., offered by Tube Co. Jan. 29 paying 2500 dollars for both systems together." ##We request you meet us halfway by securing the acceptance of our offer and sending us the details immediately.
