Title

[D8535ZAU], Letter from Louis Rau, Compagnie Continentale Edison to Thomas Alva Edison, June 26th, 1885

Editor's Notes

We ask your assistance in the following matter. As you know, Siemens brings against us a lawsuit in Belgium and in France, on account of the connections which we use in the armatures of the dynamos. Their demand is based on the patent taken out in Belgium on June 24, 1873[?] and in France on July 5, 1873[?] (Batchelor is well-acquainted with the details of this affair). ##We had hoped to come to an arrangement with Siemens in paying a royalty, but their demands were so unreasonable that this has not been possible and the suit will come before court soon, first in Belgium, where there will be a decision no doubt in a few months. ##Upton, whom we had the pleasure of seeing here, tells us that you could give us information with which we could upset Siemens's claims in the lawsuit and we must ask you to be kind enough to help us in this suit and give us the information ASAP. ##For the same rason, Simson writes us today that he cannot remain as our representative with the German Edison Co., as he is the advocate of Dr. Werner Siemens. He wishes also to have put in other hands the powers for lawsuits in Germany which you and the Light Co. have given him, so we would be obliged to you to instruct Simson to turn over all his powers to the person indicated to him by us. We will try to find the right man to do this before your instructions reach Germany. ##Simson has already substituted Dr. Katz for the suit actually pending.
