Title

[D8630B], Letter from Grace & Co (Chile) to Thomas Alva Edison, January 9th, 1886

Editor's Notes

[Extensive TAE Marg; see bottom of note] The Electric Railroad patent granted to you by the Government of Chile expires on Apr. 24, unless a demonstration of the system is made before that date. We consider the patent worth saving, and before you receive this will cable for a Sprague 1 1/2 HP motor (for which we have a code word) to be used at the mill of Mr. Enrique Lanz for the purpose of making a demonstration. Lanz has a 50 light dynamo and will arrange car, rails, etc., for a distance of 1000 ft. ##Having already gone to the expense of taking out the Patent, we ask you to furnish the motor fo rthe purpose of saving the privilege, on tha twe shall remit its value whenever the same may be sold. Lanz will probably keep the motor in case it works well. ##The Certificate of Railroad Patent is now in possession of Mr. G.W. Waters, of the Santiago Co. Please advise him to turn it over to us. [TAE Marg; written at top and bottom of second page]: "Insull write him to put a 50 light dynamo on a car and belt up [continued at bottom] so the speed of the surface of the car wheel is 3 to 5 times slower than the speed of the surface of the pulley in dynamo. [Continued further down]: He can rig up the jock[?] shaft easy enough, then if unsuccessful he has his 50 light dynamo to sell. Also tell Waters to deliver RR patent to Stewart. [Also written near bottom of page]: I see that patent expired April 24 so he can't save it."
