- Editor's Notes
- You have done so much for me in the past that I hate to ask new favors. But I am in receipt of a particularly malignant letter from NY, signed by Mr. Crowell but evidently inspired elsewhere, charging me with slandering Mr. Waters and embarrassing the Santiago Co. These charges are false, and I am getting tired of this infernal fire in the rear. I have, therefore, sent Crowell a full defense and backed it by original documents. If you can spare half an hour some day, do me the favor to read this document, and if I am in the right, take such action as you may think best. ##I also think that your lawyer should examine the documents, as I am advised that the Edison Co has signed away all its rights in Santiago and never will get a cent. ##I believe my knowledge of persons, places and language in this country is valuable to the business, but I cannot stay here in the face of this constant defamation, unless your Board give me a full and free vindication, which I can show to all interested. I cannot accept any halfway measures, because it is time that this business was settled forever. Everything is going well outside of Santiago and all would be well there if you were represented by a solid and responsible house.
