Title

[D8630ZAO], Letter from Frazar & Co to Francis Robbins Upton, Edison Lamp Co, April 29th, 1886

Editor's Notes

[Enclosure to Doc D8630ZAN] [Long, 4 page letter concerning a number of lighting issues in Japan and China--sort of a snapshot of Asian lighting business.] TAE Marg at top of letter: "We can't stop English Co. There is a new law in Japan for patents. If they will pay for patents, will give them 5 years." [Rest of letter paraphrased below:] As Mr. Congdon[?] leaves in so short a time, we hope you will arrange for him to become informed fully on electric plants, from 25 up to 100 lights, and up to 1000, 2-3-4 and 5000 lights, which our house calls for, so he can make estimates on arrival in Japan. ##Mr. Lindsley would like you to have Mr. C take out letter from Appleton, Pepperell and Massachusetts or other Eastern mills which use your lights, testifying in your favor. Also about the Harrisburg Co. ##Plans for 25, 50, 100, 200, and 500 lights we have. Would like to have you furnish the others. Yokohama wants TAE to give instruction to his English Edison branches not to interfere with Japan business. They have a German there who is soliciting orders for the Edison or Edison-Swan. [See TAE Marg at top of first page]. ##[Letter requests circulars from competing companies, gives thanks from Prof. Fujioka for lamps, requests a five year term for agency in Japan and China [see TAE Marg], requests an expert electrician to set up and run plant in Shanghai. Asks to modify contract so contracts can be closed on the spot rather than submitted to TAE [TAE Marg: "OK"]. Letter then discusses traveling expenses of Mr. Crizuku and updates TAE on the Strathleven[?] plant, and discusses discounts on lamps and an references a letter to TAE that was returned. Finally, discusses Tokyo Garden plan "Xaurado" drawings and estimate.]
