Title

[D8640K], Report from Oriental Telephone Co Ltd, April 8th, 1886

Editor's Notes

This is a printed three-page report of the accounts of the Oriental Telephone Co. for the year ending 31 Dec. 1885 presented by the board of directors to the sixth annual general meeting of the company, held 20 April 1886 at the City Terminus Hotel, Cannon Street, London. The profit and loss account showed a credit balance of 3,569 pounds, 17 shillings, 6 pence; it interestingly mentions "irregularities on the part of the late Manager at Mauritius"; also that Indian Guarantees are a heavy burden, the previous year's claims alone being 4,436 pounds, 3s., 5d.; the local companies in Bombay and Calcutta have introduced more efficient magneto systems that have led to an improvement in revenue from the previous year in spite of the general depression of trade; an increase in the revenue of the Egyptian company is reported and business in China is on a better footing.
