- [D8814AAA], Letter from Eb. Williams Thomas to Thomas Alva Edison, January 3rd, 1888
- Editor's Notes
- In accordance with suggestion in attached copy of your favor of 11/3/87 I again draw your attention to my letter of Oct 18-87 asking position in your employ that would .. me to .. a practical knowledge of electricity and its applications--this knowlegde to be supplemented by night study. # Past efforts at self-improvement (outlined in letter Oct 18-87) warrant the belief that I can pursue with fair success a career in Electrical Engineering under the conditions of work and night study. # I can furnish the proof of possession of mechanical inclinations and constructive ability. I don't presume to surprise you with the extent of this exhibit but think it a fair one considering the lack of opportunity for employment. # As proof of my earnestness in seeking employment adapted to me .. let me say that I am employed in steady position (.. in present place) and in accepting position in your employ I shall probably be obliged to make sacrifices in more than one respect. I am willing to make any reasonable sacrifice to .. situation in which close application and interest cannot fail to promote advancement. I expect to earn advancement. ## Won't you kindly appoint a day (after 12 inst) upon which I may see you in your Wall St office or other place suiting your convenience. ## PS - I omitted to state that I hold diploma from Franklin Institute for completion of two year night course in Mechanical Drawing
