Title

[D8818AST], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Edison and Swan United Electric Light Co Ltd, Samuel Flood Page, September 6th, 1888

Editor's Notes

I received your letter 9th, re a conversation which you had with Dyer, the European Agent of the Edison Lamp Co. I desire to correct an impression you have regarding my connection with the Edison Lamp Co. It is an organization entirely separate from all other Edison concerns and is composed of several stockholders. I am entirely powerless to direct the policy of this Company or to prevent them from doing business in any country where they are legally entitled to merchandise the article they manufacture. The only influence I could bear would be upon the ground of friendship. The Edison Lamp Co feel very sore about the vigorous competition they meet in this country of Swan lamps sold through the Brush Electric Light Co. They state that the Swan lamp is pushed in England to the exclusion of the Edison lamp, although nominally [sic.] people can buy Edison lamps, and they say they do not see what difference it could make to the Edison and Swan Co if they (The Edison Lamp Co) sold lamps in Gt. Britain until a final decision is reached with the patents. # The above statements were communicated to me by the active business management of the Edison Lamp Co. # I desire my position in the matter clearly understood, so I may not be held responsible, morally or otherwise, for the acts of an organization in which my voice is but one amongst many.
