Title
[D8846ABE], Letter from Lemuel Wright Serrell to Thomas Alva Edison, August 17th, 1888
Editor's Notes
"Two caveats were filed on the Phonograph, Nos. 77 and 80. ### Caveat 77 was filed March 8, 1878 and 80 was filed June 3rd 1878. You furnished one description and sketches for Caveat 77 and I send you herewith copies of the same precisely as drawn by you. After Caveat 77 was filed foreign applications were prepared and applied for, made up from Caveat 77 and also including additional matter relating to the phonograph, of which you furnished some sketches, but no written description. ### Leave at 80 was prepared pursuant to directions from you to file a Caveat in the United States to include all the features of the phonograph contained in the foreign patents. Caveat 80 therefore contains the same matter as 77 but also includes the additional matter shown in the foreign patents. I send you herewith copies of the sketches of the additional matter as furnished by you, and also a complete set of photo-lithographic copies of the drawings filed with Caveat 80 which are also copies of the drawings of the foreign patents. I also send a copy as filed of the specification of Caveat 80." Yours truly, Lemuel W. Serrell
