- [D8848ADQ], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Jesse H Lippincott, September 11th, 1888
- Editor's Notes
- "I attach hereto a copy of a resolution passed this day at a meeting of the Board of Directors with relation to the attempted assignment on the part of Mr. Ezra T. Gilliland of his contract with this Company to yourself. I would call your attention to the fact that this resoultion authorized the Officers of this Company to take such action as they may deem necessary to prevent the further payment of any moneys to Mr. Gilliland on account of the sale which he has attempted to make of his agency rights which are not transferable and which he was powerless to transfer without the consent of the Company which I represent. By referring to his contract with the Edison Phonograh Company you will see that the essence of the same is his personal services and responsibility which are manifestly not transferable without the Clompany's consent which has never been given. This letter is to give you official notification that you make any fruther payments to Mr. Gilliland at your own risk. Mr. Gilliland has today been notified by cable that his contract has been abbrogated and has also been informed as to the intention of the Edison Phonograph Company with relation to the stoppage of any further payments to him in this connection." Yours truly, Thos. A. Edison, President
