Title

[D8855ABV1], Letter from Joseph H. Taft to Alfred Ord Tate, October 1888

Editor's Notes

"In regard to Mr. Everett's accounts, Mr. Everett has good reasons for refusing to see me about them. He approached me in every possible manner to get me to approve his bills. I told him that in Mr. Edison's interest I would not approve his bills as they were largely for work that could not be found, and work claimed [unclear] been done before. I took charge of the building. At this time he left my office in high temper, declaring he would see if Mr. Edison would not pay his bills. I assured Mr. Everett again that probably Mr. Edison would do as he thought best in this matter, but he would not pay the bill over my approval. ### I think I explained this account to your book-keeper at the time I left the bill, but I suppose he has forgetten its particulars. ### It is almost inpossible to tell you just what the items are that I object to, but I think they are checked on the bill. ### I remember there are about 20 thousand bricks charged on his bill that cannot be account for, besides a number of other charges. ### If you have the copy of his bill that left at your office, I think I could more fully explain the account. If you will send me this bill, I will make the necessary notes and return it." Yours very truly, Jos. H. Taft. [Marginalia: "Rec'd abt Oct 18/88"]
