Title

[D8905ABE], Letter from Thomas Corwin Mendenhall to Thomas Alva Edison, February 10th, 1889

Editor's Notes

Dear Mr. Edison, My friend Professor Kikuchi--Dean of the SciencesDep't--Imperial University of Japan--has requested one to make an inquiry concerning the Phonograph. You may possibly remember having such Professor Kikuchi--who visisted this country as delegate from his Japanese Government at the International Time Conference in 1884. He wishes to procure one of your new phonographs for the Imperial University and desires to know from whom the purchase may be made and at what price. As I DO not know of new instruments being for sale anywhere--I address you and would be greatly obliged if you would inform me in what way one may be obtained for this Cabinet [- --?] Imp. Univeristy of Japan. I may also take the occasion to remind you of your promise--at the meeting of the Nat. Academy in/87--to send me one for our [cabins?] which already contain one of the form of few years ago. I return that--the whole matter has now passed out of your hands--but you may be able to put me in the way of obtaining one--for a [substantial?] collection and ask for use. I understand that for USE the instruments cannot be bought but must be [reused? Leased?]] --but some arrangement would be desirable - through which physical cabinets might be permanently supplied Your faithfully T.C Mendenhall
