- Editor's Notes
- [from Paris] I left New York Sept 21st and was come in hopes tonight have the pleasure of meeting you here before you left for home but I was too late. The "La Bourgogne" passed your boat Saturday. ## Inferring from your past kindness that you will not dislike hearing how I get along, I will first tell you that I am living with a refined, [culturated?], gentle lady, who is at the same time an excellent musician, painist and composer. I admire her, and she makes me feel that she likes me. We are very happy together. ## You realize Mr. Edison how lonely I must feel in this large city and how conducivve to my happiness and advancement would be a proper introduction to the American society. ## We live at a time when personal merit and useful works constitute the highest title to distinction. I know that I would not address myself to a gentleman whose influencce is more powerful in the civilized world than yours and a favorable war of whom, would more magically open to me the "parte d'honneur" wherever I present it, ## Would you do me the honnor to send me a letter for our Minester Mr. Whitelaw Reid and such other prominent Americans in Paris as are known to take an interest in nature talent and art generally? ## I changed my name to STUART as the W always [preclurs?] the French. Now I have no worry, ## Hoping Mr. Edison you will not think me forward in thus addressing you I remain yours respectfully
