- [D8912ABQ], Letter from Theosophical Society of America, Henry Steel Olcott to Thomas Alva Edison, December 20th, 1889
- Editor's Notes
- A Manchester paper prints a letter from your secretary in reply to one addressed to you from Birmingham to the effect that I was mistaken in stating that you are a member of the Theosophical Society. As this puts me in a false position, and I am sure this was never your intention but merely an inadvertance. I ask you reading of the enclosed reply of your letter to me of April 4, 1878. Perhaps you may now recall an interview about your exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1877 (I representing McCormick the US Comr as well as the Citizen Committee to which his commission successes). The admission paper aceded to in your letter to me, and being your signature, together with a second letter acknowledging your receipt of the Society's Diploma of Fellowship with thanks, are at our Headquarters in Madras -- highly valued documents. Since we parted the society has expanded and includes 200 branches the world over. What is has accomplished towards reviving the old Aryan philosophies exceeds are anticipations. You told me that you were making some experiments with a pendulum to test the dynamism of the will: since then I have seen many such tests successfully made. # My permanent home is Madras; I am here on a flying visit. Hoping to hear that the error above noted over due to forgetfulness will be corrected.
