Title
[D8923AAF], Letter from Elias Cornelius Atkins to Thomas Alva Edison, April 4th, 1889
Editor's Notes
I wish to investigate the best method of electric welding and would feel greatly obliged to you if you would give me your opinion as to the best method now in use, and with whom to correspond to obtain the necessary information. It is probable that your own patents cover this process, and if so I should be pleased to have your explanation and terms. # I have also been considering the possibility of the use of a magnet to control the movements of hostile iron-clads in approaching harbors and coast defenses. I do not know what results could be obtained with the dynamo in producing magnets of great power. Do you think an iron-clad could be handled with powerful tugs submerged, and a controling magnet attached to the side of the vessel and connected to the tugs directly or by cables? It may be this idea has no value but if it could be put in to practice it might be a means of defence.
