Editor's Notes

New York, April 8, 1889####My Dear Tate,####For with please find explanatory memorandum re the installation of an electric light plant for Mr. Joseph Stern. Kindly read and if necessary inform Mr. Edison, and return.####Truly yours, CEC####[written across the whole doc: "OK"]####[Enclosure]:####March 29, 89####C.E. Chinnock, Esq.,####The Edison United M'f'g. Co.####New York City####Dear Sir:--####I beg to refer to you the enclosed letter which I have received from Mr. Joseph Stern, New York City, relative to delay in installing an electric lighting plant on his premise.####Yours truly####T.A. Edison####[Enclosure]:####New York, Mch 28 1889####Thomas A Edison, Esq.####Menlo Park####N.J####Dear Sir####On Jany 28/89 I ordered through one of your agents C.J. [Hubbell?] a 300 light dynamo with lamp and other material necessary to complete an isolated plant up to date the work has not been completed not withstanding two months have lapsed I have notified your company at their office and Mr. Hubbell has accosted me in every way to hurry the completion of the job without success, as a last resource I send this to you as the head official of the Edison United Co. hoping that you will spur your people up and complete the small amount of work necessary to commence [securing?] the plant an early reply will oblige####Yours Respectfully####Joseph Stern####Mr. Chinnock.####In regard to the Joseph Stern plant, I would say this plant is one that was secured by Mr. Hubbell after it had been virtually promised to Mr. MacLean. Mr. Stern had in his possession at the time an estimate from Mr. MacLean and in all probability Mr. Hubbell was aware of it and he secured the order by cutting. Since the order was seccured and goods ordered there has been some influence at work with Mr. Cochrane to render him very much dissatisfied with the treatment he had received from this Company. While I do not wish to accuse Mr. Hubbell of anything of that nature, the fact that Mr. Stern has addressed a letter to Mr. Edison is to my mind prima facie evvidence that Mr. Hubbell has been instrumental, to a certain extent, in causing the dissatisfaction on the part of Mr. Stern. I would stat ethat Mr. Stern's complaint is not entirely unfounded, inasmuch as the order for shafting was given to the Edison Machine Works and a delay of three weeks was caused thereby. The belts were ordered by Mr. Klein and were not of the manufacture that c--- act called for. However, as I now understand it, everything is satisfactory and plant is now running.####W.A. Willard####April 1, 1889#### [name mentions: Joseph Stern, Thos Edison, A.O. Tate C.E Chinnock, Mr. Hubbell, Mr. MacLean, Edison United Mfg Co.]
