- [Translation] Pantin 20th December, 1889. Thomas A. Edison, Dear Sir:-- We have the honor to enclose drawing showing how an engine of 300 horse power may be useful to you. While at this point we recommend to you very strongly when you put the machine in place to well instruct the workmen upon the manner of caring for the metallic stuffing--boxes of the rods of this machine. The stuffing boxes should always be very slightly thrown up by hand only. They should never in pressed when the engine is working, but only when it is stopped. During the first four or five days of operation there may be some escapes of steam, which it should not be the object to cut off suddenly. They will themselves disappear at the end of a little while. All the furnishings of the piston rods of your machine are now, and the least excess of pressure will put them out of servicce is an instant. It would produce a beating that would melt the metal when the pressure would be too strong. The appointments are excellent, but on the ondition of being thoroughly well watched. It is essential also that the oiling with mineral valvoline should never be wanting in the cylinders.##The principal parts of your machine have left our workshops to-day, and we hope that they will be put on board the transatlantique steamship next Saturday, of which we will send you the name by cable as soon as we shall be satisfied of their departure.##We beg you to be so good as to say that we can cover the pricce of this machine by applying to Messrs. Drexel, Morgan & Co., as you have authorized us to do for the models and designs. (Signed) A. Weyher.
