Editor's Notes
The date written on the document was misread by the editors as 1890. It is clearly [18]96. By that time, John Ott, who dated and signed it, appears to have been supervising experimental work, including on the talking doll, see [NS96AEM], Technical Note, Thomas Alva Edison, July 6th, 1896, [NS97AES], Technical Note, John F Ott, January 30th, 1897, and [NS97AEY], Technical Note, Thomas Alva Edison, March 17th, 1897. In addition, labor records do not show Fred Ott, who was listed as a machinist, working on experiments related to the talking doll in 1890, see [NL023-F] Distribution of Labor #6 (1890-1891) . He was added to the experimental staff in 1891, see [D9111AAA], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to John F Randolph, January 12th, 1891. [NL013-F] Labor & Material Subledger #6 (1890-1896) shows work on a Talking Doll Model in June-Dec 1896 (p. 235) and on Toy Phonograph new body #3 in June-October 1896 un June-October 1890 (p. 235).
