Sept. 8, 1892.
P. Callan, Esq., Deputy Inspector of Factories etc. State of New Jersey, No. 25 Bruce St., Newark, N.J.
Dear Sir:-
With reference to your visit to the Laboratory a few days ago, when you called for the purpose of obtaining information relative to the number of hours which constitute a week’s work in this establishment, I beg to inform you that no goods whatever are manufactured here, and therefore the act, copy of which you kindly left for our perusal would seem not to apply in this case. The Laboratory is devoted exclusively to experimental work in connection with Mr. Edison’s inventions, no other business whatever being conducted. The staff consists of experimenters and a few mechanics, all of whom are enraged in experimental work.
I regret that you happened to call at a time when both Mr. Edison and myself were absent. Has either of been here, all the information possible concerning the nature of the Laboratory work would have been given to you. Trusting that this will be satisfactory.
I am yours very truly,
Private Secretary.
