J. I. C. Clarke, Esq., Room 25, #154 Nassau St., New York
Dear Sir:-
Mr. Edison has been absent from the Laboratory during the past three weeks and did not receive your letter of 22nd ult. until yesterday.
In regard to his idea for protecting the skins of steel vessels, he has tried this, and while it keeps the steel clean, a scum of about an eighth of an inch thick forms. This scum would foul the vessel and is the great trouble in the matter; although when the action is knocked off the steel seems to be perfectly bright.
Yours truly,
Private Secretary.
