Letterhead of Western Pennsylvania Phonograph Company Pittsburg, Pa., Jan. 19, 1892. The Edison Phonograph Works, Ornage, N. J. <Stamp: RECEIVED JAN [illegible] 1892 [Ans.?] Jan 21 92> Gentlemen: - The one hundred musical records, shipped by you on the 16th inst., were received yesterday and we find upon examination that four records were broken, showing that the goods were not very well packed. In the former shipment only two records were broken and we did not consider it worth while to say anything, as on the first lot or two we received from you none of them were broken and we supposed that the breaking of the two might have been accidental. However, when so many as four are broken, we cannot stand it. We also received two records which are imperfect and would indicate that your inspector did not use proper precaution in setting aside the cylinders for sale. The music commences on the extreme left end of the cylinder, and about a quarter or three eighths of an inch from the end is the announcement, "La Cigale" and the name of the band &c, is made on top of the music. We will hold these cylinders here in case you should wish us to return them to you. Please make proper deductions for imperfect cylinders and breakage, and oblige, Yours truly, Henry F. Gilg
