Letterhead of Edison United Phonograph Company
May 3rd, 1892
My Dear Mr. Moriarty,
Just a line to acknowledge receipt by this steamer of your Cylinder which came in today safely. It is almost like a visit from you and I was very glad to receive it. Mr. Wallacestein has not been in since his first call and Tate says he has not seen Mr. Edison, so I was informed by Henry Seligman on making the inquiry. I hope his report will be satisfactory and that the negotiations will be successful.
Phonographs are finding their way to Peru, I had an inquiry from David B Mills 48 Vesey St for some Cylinders & music for a customer of theirs at Lima who purchased one, his name is Peter Bacigalupi & co but he consented to write him that they were not yet for sale for that country. You suggest that I send you all correspondence for the Foreign Committee, will not this render us liable to some criticism from Col. Gouraud. I enclose you some correspondence with him on his inquiring why we did not advise him in regard to the condition of our treasury, & you will see that my letters are worded with some care.
Col Gouraud’s son is dropped from the monthly payroll and another man from the weekly payroll. I have not yet seen the subscription list, I asked Mr. Seligman whether he has heard from you and received a negative reply, so doubtless has come in yet. Of course you know that Bircham & Co charges amounted to about £400 & stereoscopic settlement was £1100. E.E. Lewis told me a day or two ago that two friends of his had formed practically a partnership to exhibit the Phonograph in South America (I expect for the purpose of selling them also) one man sailed for Colon the other remains here to forward supplies I don’t hear anything more about Insull.
Your Sincere Friend
[Signed] G.N. Morison
I feel sorry you have so much trouble over there but it must come out right in the end.
