[LB007665], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Arnold Henry White, July 5th, 1882

Editor's Notes

I have just seen your letter to Johnson regarding high prices of our machinery as compound with Swan & others, we had and have than difficulty here but when put into right light before the intending purchase [--] figures we generally get the [same] which give satisfaction and hellp future sales immensely.##Now if you will give me all the [a--] so I can work ununderstandingly I can bring you out all right. First send me [Siemans] price list of all machines used for incandesing lights the number of lights each machine is guaranteed to run. the candle power of each lamp (It is perhaps as well to know this point from actual observation). the horse power they say is required. Also the same datas from other makers Also Swan and other price lists and publication. Also a report of actual cost [what] has been done for the money including [-am] &c [boui] if sent in or already in [US] in some place where it has not been put in as an advertisement. I mean an honest sale for profit##[Now] know that our efforts have been [--] [drive] machnes from which we are to sell Electricity or rather lights and as highly economical and [house] in the Isolated branch of the business we work to a slight [temporary] disadvantage.##You will notice that lately we have addressed the Dynamo costs per light down to [25.00] on the 250 machine and $6.00 per light on the 150. Now my impression is that Swan installations have generally a 10 candle lamp (those on the [Servia] were 6 candle lamps [usual] 18 4 1/2 to 5 candles when all were on [Siemans alternating 200 light machine being used if they are [16] candles then our 250 machine of [16] candles will give 400 of our 10 candle lamps##If an engine is to be provided but [--] horse power will be required, an Armington [Klihn] Engine for [$700] job will produce that power, thus we have 400, 10 candle lamps with engines for $2000. or [5.00] per lamp including power.##The cost of [copper] to make the lamp instruments will be seven times less than Swan his lamps being, I believe [30] ohms and ours 250. I am anxious to hear the particulars of the costs of his installations for profit and the opinion of an expert as to the extent of any of the profit. Machines can be made at almost any price, this [nearly] a question of [policy]
