[LB007892], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Arnold Henry White, Edison Electric Light Co Ltd, August 11th, 1882

Editor's Notes

I have seen your letter to Johnson on the subject of machnes & also his reply thereto. I have also looked closely into your estimate for a 80 Light Plant & [---] several discrepancies. For instance you put a Z Dynamo at L140 while I am unable after making the most liberal allowances for Frieght & Insurance to bring the cost to you above L--6] we quote Z machnes at $550 fob New York & this is the basis of my estimate of cost to you. Then again I fail to see why you should [---] L55.86 8 for four six Light [-------] while Swan charges [only] L8.00] which must include quite a profit to him. I presume you will say [that] Bergmann & Co charges so much. If [so] get your Electronics from [the] same man that Swan does. I am sure Johnson would join me in this suggestion. then you have one [thirty] light [seventy] 2.5 Swan does not put in any [more] & why should you in your main estimate we may think Switches & Electro[licns] very necessary & as made for us such things go a long way towards making our Installations complete but yet where there must be close figuring to counteract the [most] [bare faced lying I think we can afford to dispense with their things & simply suggest their use and estimate for them as [-ated]. [Probably] I think we can make you a much cheaper socket without [cost]. Johnson thinks he can get one up that will answer the purpose & which Bergmann & Co can sell at no [cost].##I enclose you herewith my rough estimate of the cost of an eight light installation. My conclusions are very different to yours. As compared with [Siemans] estimate with [Berger] machine [---] my estimate [if] [cost] [cost] if L25.9 [a---] what Swan will [supply] [the] Plant for. But if Swan uses a Siemens machne my estimate shows a balance of L52.14 3 in our favor which I think shows that I can supply economical machines to compete with Siemens uneconomical machines with advantage. I have estimated for 40 eight candle Lights & 40 Sixteen candle B light. These are all worked on a 55 volt circuit and a Z machine has just the capacity requisite to carry them. If you run the 8 candle lamps at two candles & the 16 candle lamps at sixteen twenty candles this will give you 1200 candles for eighty lights or an average of 15 candles which is almost double the actual candle power of the [seven] Swan 20 candle lamps.##Considering the length at which Mr Johnson has dealt with this [---] I do not think it necessary for me to go further into it
