Title

[LB014383], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Edison Electric Light Co, Sherburne Blake Eaton, November 2nd, 1882

Editor's Notes

Your favor of 1st inst with enclosures (which I now return herewith) came duly to hand.##My views are very strong against suing Maxim or Swan, and my reasons exactly the same as given a year and a half ago when it was urged with great persistency by the Directors that a suit should be conducted against Maxim Since that time the Maxim Co have lost not less than $500,000, directly & indirectly, in their attempts to introduce Incandescent Lighting and today they cannot be looked upon as in any way being our rivals##As to the Swan Brush Combination my opinion against suing them is even stronger than in the case of Maxim in so much as the use of an Accumulator cannot but hasten their destrruction.##I fail to see the necessity of our entering on costly & lengthy law suits against Infringe[ment] rivalry has in no wise affected our business. We should only be expending money and time which our business most certainly requires and give a prominence and publicity to Infringers who are not at present doing sufficient business to cause us the slightest alarm.
