Title

[LB017234], Letter from Thomas Alva Edison to Samuel Flood Page, Edison's Indian and Colonial Electric Co, September 7th, 1883

Editor's Notes

Referring to my cablegram to you asking for payment of bills sent to J.B. Morgan & Co., and your reply stating that Mr. Insull arranged to take three months draft for same I beg to state that my recollection of the arrangement as made with you is Entirely different to that stated in your cablegram.##I would remind you of the conversation which occurred in relation to the general matter of goods to be ordered by your Company and your request that we should name two prices - one for payment on shipment in New York and the other payment at the End of three months. We explained to you that it would be quite impossible to make any such arrangement as we had not the capital to carry the goods ordered and Mr Insull suggested that you should arrange with some London bankers such as Glynn Mills to accept three months drafts in payment of our shipments and he stated that he thought if he could show some such guarantee Messrs Drexel Morgan & Co., or other Exchange bankers would doubtless cash the drafts. I distinctly remember this Conversation and also Mr. Insulls stipulation that the order given by you when in New York should be paid for when the bills of lading were presented in London.##At the time you explained that you could not pay for them in New York but could immediately you got to London.##I think after reading this the conversations above referred to will recall themselves to your mind and I trust that as the result you will pay Messrs J. S. Morgan & Co the amount of the bill Sent you. The tubes and wire have yet to be sent and I shall be glad if you will please Cable me immediately you get this stating that you will pay for these on the presentation of the invoices and bills of lading in London.
